How to Create a Free Sidereal Birth Chart (with Interpretations)

In this post you’ll learn how to create your free sidereal astrology chart on Astrodienst, as well as how to navigate their interpretations section which will help you understand what your chart means if you’re new to astrology.

[Note: These instructions work for tropical astrology, which is the system most people in the West use. Just skip Step 3. I switched to the sidereal zodiac because I’ve been studying Eastern astrology. I created this guide because I’m conducting research for my primary practice of onychomancy, or divination of the nails, and will be sharing public surveys that rely on knowing your sidereal astrological placements. Stay tuned.]

How to Create Your Sidereal Birth Chart

I always recommend Astrodienst. You can create a free profile for access to everything from horoscopes to interactive wheels that offer interpretations when you click on them, to extended charts and free interpretations. Their paid automated reports are pretty good too. So go ahead and create your free account to get started.

First we’ll pull up your sidereal chart, and then I’ll show you how to pull up automatically generated interpretations for each placements.

Step 1: Click “Free Horoscopes,” and then “Extended Chart Selection”

Step 2: Either select yourself from the drop-down menu or click “Add A New Person,” then come back to this page

Step 3: Scroll down to “Options for zodiac and houses”

Next to “Zodiac” on the right, select “Sidereal.” I also use whole sign houses, so if you want to select that, go to “House System” drop-down menu on the left and select “whole signs.”

Step 4: Select “Click here to show the chart”

You should get to a screen that looks like this – you can right-click to copy or save the image. If you don’t know what the glyphs mean, there is a helpful table beneath the wheel with more details. If you still don’t know what any of this means, keep reading for instructions on how to pull up the free interpretations page.

How to Pull Up Your Free Sidereal Chart Interpretations

The Astrodienst free interpretations feature was so amazing when I first was getting into astrology. It takes practice and study to be able to analyze the chart as a whole, but when you’re just learning, this automated feature can be very helpful. Here’s how to find it:

Step 5: Assuming you’ve already done all of the above, go back to the “Extended Chart Selection” page, go down to “Sections” and select the “Pullen/Astrolog” tab.

Step 6: Next to “Chart Type,” select “Simple Chart Delineation by Walter Pullen.” Make sure you have “Sidereal” and “Whole signs” selected, as shown. Select “Click here to show the chart.”

Step 7: You should arrive at this great wall of text. Now what?

The Pullen interpretations page is very long and can be difficult to read if you don’t know what you’re looking for. Here are my recommendations for what beginners should look for.

  1. The first section discusses the placement of each of your planets in their respective signs and houses. This is where you’ll find interpretations of your Sun, Moon, Rising, and other planets. For example, in this case we’re looking at Beyonce’s sidereal whole sign chart, who has the Sun in Leo and 2nd House.
  2. The next 2 sections discuss aspects, which are the angles between each of the planets, and midpoints. I would skip all this if you’re a beginner.
  3. My personal favorite part of the Pullen interpretation is the dominance charts, this section about 3/4 of the way down with a bunch of percentages everywhere:

These charts show your dominant planet, zodiac sign, element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water), and mode (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable). As a beginner you’re probably just familiarizing yourself with your Sun, Moon, and Rising signs. Understanding your dominant qualities is a great next step for understanding your chart as a whole.

So in the case of Beyoncé’s chart, above, we see that while her sidereal sun sign is Leo, her dominant planet is Mercury at 13.1%, her her dominant zodiac sign is Virgo at 16.7%, her dominant element is Water at 28.3%, and her dominant modality is Cardinal at 39.7%.

I want to keep this at a beginner level so we’ll end this here, but do let me know if you have any questions in the comments.

  3. Thanks for writing this, this recommended site is a bajillion times better than AstroSeek and actually seems to get the whole house system correct (AstroSeek apparently had all of my Houses wrong!)

  5. Wow, thank you for taking the time to write this article! The screen shots are extremely helpful too. I’ve been curious about the sidereal zodiac but was quite confused just looking at the chart. Thanks for showing the ‘extra’ features offered by astrodienst.
    Best wishes to you!
